The End of an Era for Netscape

nn.jpgI befriended Netscape Navigator the first time in a North Idaho College campus computer lab in the mid 90s. I loved watching the “N” sphere spin away while Navigator diligently processed packets! This was back in the days when you could break a chat room by not closing an html tag.

The Internet has come a long way since then, and so has one of the original web browsers. Sadly, 2007 marks the end of an era for Netscape. AOL acquired Netscape Communications Corporation in 1999, and 9 years later is handing it over to Mozilla, which in-turn will encourage users to adopt Firefox.

First Things First… Are You in Google Local?

If you operate a small business, and have a web presence for said business, you are probably interested in traffic. And, if you operate locally, getting local eyes on your site may be even more important.

It’s no secret. Google is king of search engine traffic… including regional, or local traffic. This is the type of traffic that comes from searches that are followed by the name of a city or city/state combo. Punch-in: ‘coffee shops boise, id’ in Google to see what I mean, or click here.

When a search like this is preformed, Google displays a ‘Local Business Results’ entry that includes a map at the top of the results.

If you’re not listed in Google’s Local Business results you are missing out on local traffic and potential customers. Lucky for you, getting listed is easy and free. Like I said, First Things First.

To get listed, head over to Google’s Local Business Center to start the submission process. After you submit your information, Google will give you a call to verify, then you’re good to go!

Once your site is indexed, it will start showing with local search results. Your listing also enables customers with a review tool and a handy dandy map to lead them directly to your business.
